1.) As noted in the video, veterans face unique challenges within the classroom including but not limited to: struggles with mental health, hypervigilance, sensory issues, difficulty with attention, and memory loss. The video additionally noted struggles with fear and uncertainty when being physically in a classroom learning environment. The listed challenges may pose issues with retention of information within the class, ability to engage in classroom discussion, turning in assignments, and memory of deadlines.
2.) The above needs can be addressed through thorough explanation by the instructor (verbally as well as within the syllabus and course), reminders (verbally and built into the course), and transparency within the classroom setting. In addition, these issues can be addressed through establishing clear, direct expectations within the classroom that highlight mutual respect amongst those within the course.
3.) There are many demographics that may struggle with challenges related to schooling. Some students who may face challenges that will need to be considered when delivering the course are: students who are facing housing instability, students with financial struggles, students who are single parents, students who do not have support systems, and students who face physical or mental health struggles. As mentioned in question two, these struggles can be addressed through clear, open communication between the student and instructor as well as direct expectations for the classroom.
