Veterans in the Classroom

I have worked with quite a few veterans in my classes during my time teaching. Each one is unique just like every other student. They frequently struggle with memory issues due to brain injuries which can make learning math quite challenging. I've also had some with severe test anxiety and frustration issues. I deal with each student on an individual basis and adjust the assignments to their needs. I find that just letting them know that I'm willing to work with them to find a method that meets their needs often times eases a lot of their anxiety. I frequently change testing environments and due date for these students, as needed. I don't find that meeting a veteran's needs is much different than meeting another student's needs. I try to provide each student with what they need to learn. Frequently the veterans are  more upfront with me about their needs.
