Application Assignment #7: Job/Internship Search & Resume Rough Draft -- DUE 10/20
Introduction
This assignment has five parts:
- Find two job or internship postings in your field that look interesting to you.
- Complete the Job/Internship Posting Worksheet. In this worksheet you’ll analyze both jobs.
- Find two model resumes that look interesting to you.
- Prepare a professional resume appropriate for these jobs or internships, modeled on resumes that you find online.
- Create a transmittal memo.
Part 1: Job and Internship Postings
Search a job posting site like indeed, ZipRecruiter or a site specific to your profession. You can also inquire with your advisor in your discipline about internship opportunities. Find two interesting job or internship postings in your field. You can choose positions for which you are currently qualified or jobs that you will be qualified for when you complete your degree. These should be current postings.
Part 2: Job and Internship Worksheet
Complete the Job/Internship Worksheet linked here. If you need to do informal research to answer the questions, be sure to include the title and date of your source. It’s important that I’m able to access the job posting you’ve found. If you cannot offer a link to the job posting in the worksheet, please attach a screenshot of the posting with your assignment.
Part 3: Resume Models
Search for two model resumes that look interesting to you. There are resources listed on the Moodle course homepage but feel free to search independently. If you see resumes labeled as either chronological or functional, choose the chronological model. Download or scan two model resumes. Be sure to note the website(s) where you found the resumes in your transmittal memo.
Part 4: Draft Resume
Draft a professional resume for yourself that incorporates appropriate elements from your models you found online. If you already have a resume, by all means use your current draft. Just review your current resume to make sure that it’s up-to-date. This is just a draft -- next week we will be revising resumes in small groups.
Note: Your resume should reflect your current accomplishments. Even though you might be analyzing jobs that you’ll be qualified for in a few years, don’t write your resume as if it is a few years from now. Make it accurate and reflective of your current accomplishments.
At a minimum, your resume should include the following sections:
- Contact information.
- Education and certifications.
- Work experience.
Additional sections can include:
- Volunteer experience.
- Activities and awards.
- Relevant hobbies and skills.
You will need to use indents and a variety of text effects, like font size and bold to make your resume visually appealing. Use strong verbs and parallelism in your text.
Part 5: Transmittal Memo
Submit your documents with a brief transmittal memo that does the following:
- Lists all attachments.
- Lists where you found the job postings.
- Explains whether you are currently qualified for the the jobs/internships or whether these are future jobs.
- Explains whether you already had a resume or if you created one from scratch.

- Model Resume 2.
