Application Assignment #4: Style and Design -- DUE 9/22
This assignment asks you to revise an existing memo to make it more appealing to readers. You will change its tone, readability, and design but not its message. You will also write a short analysis/report of the decisions you made as you revised.
Purpose
This assignment will help you practice the principles we’ve studied so far involving writing for your readers, achieving a readable style, and designing documents.
Task, Part 1
Choose one of the two options below for this assignment:
Review the McCurrey text on Audience Analysis to help you think about how to understand the perspective of the audience for your revised memo. Your audience will be either messy tenants or veterinary clinic student workers, depending on which text you choose.
- Use tips from Lumen Learning Module 3: Format and Sexy Technical Communication: Common Page Design to help you decide how to organize the information more effectively.
- Use headers, lists, imagery, and other elements to help readers locate information easily.
- Refer to Lumen Learning Module 4: Language and Tone for tips on making the sentences more readable and using appropriate tone for your audience. Change the wording as necessary and omit details that do not seem relevant.
- Retain the main points of the memos.
- You may add illustrations (images, charts, graphs) if you believe it is appropriate.
- Leave these documents in memo format unless you feel that a different format is more appropriate for the given audience and situation. If you decide not to use the memo format, be sure to explain in your analysis paragraph.
Task, Part 2
Write a separate transmittal memo to me in which you explain the main changes that you made and why you made them. What worked in the original memo and what needed to be changed? Give specific examples. Explain how your revisions make the document more usable for the audience. Your transmittal memo should be submitted separately from your revised memo. It should have this heading:
