Speak the language your learners are listening in.   reproduced with permission from Scott Hamm, Abilene Christian UniversityCell phone

What is this language?  This language is normally portable, visual, and entertaining.

Using a text message to communicate with students is an easy, effective way to reach most of the students in your course.

  • 99% of students own a cell phone with texting

Successful Model

Using the tool, Remind, instructors at Abilene Christian University have increased success rates using text messages to communicate with their classes.  The model used was to send 4 text messages to class each week.  Using Remind, the messages can be sent from your cell phone or created and sent using e-mail.  The four text messages per week used this format:

  • One message with information on the class.  IE, a quiz date, due date, or reading reminder
  • One message on a current event tied to the course material
  • One fun message
  • One message inviting the students to text the instructor back (establishing a feedback loop)

Example Texts

Below are several example texts from a course being taught by Dr. Scott Hamm.  The texts he generated for students were normally created on his computer.
