As the video pointed out, veterans have some unique challenges when taking online classes after their time in the service. Experience shapes worldview, and with so many unique experiences, it is not surprising that a veteran may feel isolated and out of place in a classroom of [usually younger] civilians. I hypothesize that another challenge veterans may face in an online class, especially an English class, is a feeling that this subject really doesn't matter, compared to the hands-on experience of being in a team focused on survival.

Fostering a friendly classroom culture and mutual respect is always imperative in any class, but I imagine this would be especially helpful when veterans are a part of the class. Organized class structure, good communication, and clear expectations, as well as lots of discussions on the "why" of the class ("why does this subject matter in the 'real world'?") also may be especially beneficial.

With so many students all with different backgrounds coming together, each student's possible support solutions are often very different, too. On the one hand, single parents taking a class can struggle with deadlines and childcare needs, and may need to turn off their Zoom cameras during class. Having more grace for students with extenuating circumstances can go a long way. On the opposite end of the spectrum, younger students with limited life experiences may entirely skip assignments and assume if something isn't clear to them, they can just ignore it with no consequences. Establishing more concrete standards is important for helping these students learn how to set goals, problem solve, and follow instructions.
