For projects like essays, I consider timely feedback to be annotations and comments in addition to the rubric, returned no more than two weeks after submission.
Too much feedback means quantity outweighs the quality. We all reach a critical capacity where new information just doesn't stick. For students, that can happen when we give them feedback that doesn't make sense, that they have to spend too much time figuring out.
In Composition, a score is merely a starting point. Telling a student they got 3 out of 5 points on grammar doesn't help them fix comma splices. Explanatory comments or a direction to more resources is needed to make that feedback worthwhile.
