For Face-to face dance classes, I start with a simple improv game based in movement. Learner are asked to create a short phrase of movement with their name (said out loud) within the phrase. With a round robin format: each student demonstrates their phrase with their name and everyone learns the phrase. We then add on with each person till a longer phrase is created. This exercise allows all learners to learn each other’s names and have an idea about how each person physically moves. Online dance classes have a challenge in that we are not sharing the same physical space. I have asked each learner to record themselves doing the exercise and upload it into discussion forum. As a graded exercises the participation is usually high; each learner still has the ability to be introduced to their classmates.
