I begin face-to-face class by using class roster to call on students and ask them questions such as where they were born and raised, what degree they are completing and when they will graduate, what indoor and outdoor activities they enjoy.
For online class I ask students to introduce themself to the class. I ask them similar questions as above. Students are invited to ask other students questions.
Generally the outcome is favorable. Students communicate their activities and hobbies, family and work responsibilities, and information about their pets.
