In a face-to-face environment I like to use icebreaker activities like building a tower out of dry spaghetti and marshmallows. I also like to use find someone who activities. I did the find someone who activity in my synchronous zoom classes with lots of success. I put them in a breakout room with 3 or 4 students and we switched rooms every 2 minutes until their sheet was filled out. There was great conversation and we really got to know our peers. I have not figured out a way to do this for my fully online classes. It is hard to facilitate discussions that are best held real time. I do use the student introduction and the random glossary (not reinventing the wheel). I would really like to think of a way to make the introduction part more enjoyable for everyone.
